In this role, the responsibility varies depending on the type of place you work. It could include removing damaged parts so that repairs can take place safely and refitting them later.

Mechanical, Electrical and Trim (MET) Technicians will get involved with wheel alignment, air conditioning, diagnostics, electrical faults, and calibration. This role is highly technical, particularly with modern electric & hybrid vehicles. You may use hand tools in this role, but you will also use technical equipment which helps diagnose problems and reinstate the vehicle to its pre-accident state.

As a Vehicle Damage Mechanical Technician, you can often expect to:

• Remove parts and components so the Vehicle Damage Assessor (VDA) and you can see what damage there is
• Replace the parts once you’ve discovered any issues and at the end of the repair
• Check the air conditioning system is working (degas and regas)
• Carry out checks on the vehicle steering and suspension systems (4-wheel alignment)
• Remove and fit wheel/tyres, making sure they are balanced and safe
• Carry out repairs either physically or using technology
• Get trained to understand and work with all kinds of vehicles and equipment
