Vehicle Sales

In the Automotive Industry we have lots of different types of businesses. If your passion is learning about the latest cars and technology and helping customers buy one that suits their lifestyle and needs, then vehicle sales may be the role for you.

In this role the responsibility may vary depending on the type and size of the place you work. You may interact and work with other departments such as Parts, Service, Warranty and Aftersales. You will act as a point of contact for Customers, helping them to decide what vehicle to buy or lease by explaining all the features and benefits. You may sell them maintenance plans or warranties. Vehicle Salespeople often go out on demonstrator tests with Customers.

Working in Vehicle Sales, you can often expect to:

  • Greet Customers and show them around the vehicles at the dealership
  • Show them controls and explain all the things that the vehicle has
  • Provide information about Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and range, or fuel economy for other engine types
  • Calculate how much a vehicle is worth if they are “trading it in” against a new one
  • Look at other products that are on offer to help the Customer save money
  • Check-in new/used vehicles arriving on-site

Remember every business is different, and every Vehicle Sales role is too, but if you speak to people who do this job they will say “it’s the best job ever” as you help people to buy or lease a vehicle, which may just be their dream one!

This position is so important as it means that the Customer will drive away in their vehicle knowing they have the right vehicle for them, the best deal and that they have support afterwards if they have any questions.

Don’t worry as we know you may not have the experience just yet, but you may have some of the qualities already such as effective communication and working well as a team.

You will learn all about the role and businesses, and this will help you improve your confidence and give you the experience and support you need to be a great future employee.

So, if you want to be a great Vehicle Salesperson here are some of the things you will need:

  • Great teamwork skills to work well with others
  • Be able to use your initiative once you are trained
  • Great communication skills including being able to listen
  • A willingness to learn and find out about vehicle types, features, and benefits so you can explain to others about them
  • To Understanding what the Customers need, is called having empathy
  • Patience, often selling a vehicle can take a long time as people do not always decide straight away

A minimum of grade 4 (formerly C Grade) in English & Maths (GCSE or equivalent) is often but not always required.
