Spring has finally sprung!

Spring is finally here, well meteorologically speaking, but it is long awaited after the storms, snow, hail, and rain we’ve experienced recently. It is the season of renewal and growth, new life, blossoming flowers and as the days get longer and the sun shines, our moods should lift. Often Spring can make us feel happier, hopeful, more energised and feeling more receptive to change and growth. From a personal perspective it can be a time for pressing the reset button. Maybe you want a change of direction, or to turn your vision into reality or set meaningful goals whether in your career, wellbeing, or both.

So, is it time for a Spring Clean?

This is normally an annual chore that people undertake in their homes to clear the air, get rid of the old and in with the new, but perhaps we need to do a Spring Clean on ourselves and our businesses?

Where do you start?

If you didn’t start a plan on the first of January, you are in the majority, so it’s not too late to start planning and getting rid of all those things that hold you back or serve no purpose. It’s a time to think about personal growth. Bulbs that were planted last year are starting to push through and when the weather warms up, we will start to see flowers blossoming.

Think of how it makes you feel when you see all the colours, smell the scent, and watch the bees buzzing and hear the birds singing. That’s how you will feel when you see your plan coming together, where you can tick off your achievements and work on those still left to do and have a big smile on your face.

Nature is a great place to immerse ourselves in for wellbeing, sometimes just sitting there and listening to all the sounds is just magical. With warmer days approaching we can do more of this on our lunch breaks, so instead of eating at our desks or staying inside surfing the internet or texting, we can go for a walk or a sit down and relax a bit more and think about nothing even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Personal growth planning is often easier as you are more in control of it than a business, however there are things that life throws at us which we can’t control, but we can influence or improve them so we need to focus on the things we can change and worry less about the things we can’t. Easier said the done, right?

Here are my delightful dozen things to think about:

  • Stop being too hard on yourself – give yourself margins of error.
  • Don’t isolate yourself, surround yourself with like minded people, avoid those that emotionally drain you particularly when you are not feeling 100%.
  • Take time to remember what you have achieved and how far you have come and how much you have grown.
  • Celebrate every achievement however small, write it down and say how it made you feel. Look back at it when things don’t always go to plan and remember what you did differently and how it made you feel.
  • Establish or re-establish a routine. Anything connected to your purpose or passion should be included. No one else is going to work on these for you, so you must take back control and work on what YOU want.
  • Learn to say NO – have the courage to say no. Remember, this is your life, so be kind to yourself and take back the time that you deserve to work on you.
  • Worry less about what people think, it’s your journey not theirs!
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help, it’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength.
  • Do what makes you happy and then do it a bit more, and more again.
  • Unplug and get outside – life will pass you by if you stay plugged into technology.
  • Become immune to the negative well poisoners. Remember they have their own problems which are not yours, stay focused on your purpose.
  • Listen more – to others but more importantly to yourself!
