Work Experience….
During work experience within a Heavy Vehicle workshop in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, Barry worked with two experienced Heavy Vehicle technicians who maintained a fleet of tankers shipping liquid eggs up and down the country, “you did not want that dripping on you as you lay underneath to fix part of a tanker,” he comments. During this first work experience encounter while still at school, Barry learnt a lot, and greasing the plate was part of his job each morning. Barry’s second work experience placement occurred while he was a full-time automotive student at Bridgwater & Taunton College. This took place with Stacey’s Motors Peugeot (as it was known at that time,) and led to Barry securing a full apprenticeship with them.
Shifting gears….
Following Barry’s apprenticeship with Stacey’s Motors Peugeot, he spent a happy 10 years with them working as a vehicle technician. Venturing further into the automotive realm, Barry then made a pivotal career turn, transitioning from the workshop to education and taking on the role of a Centre Co-ordinatorfor Bridgwater & Taunton College.
A few years later, the next phase in Barry’s career took him to the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) as he ventured into the domain of business development. Here, his understanding of the technical side of the automotive industry was met with a new metric of success – strategic partnerships, and revenue growth.Remaining with the IMI, Barry then became the organisation’s End Point Assessment Manager – streamlining the entry of new automotive talent into the industry. After over 11 years with the IMI, Barry has recently joined Autotech Group as the company’s first, Business Relationship Director.
