Mechanical Technician
In the Automotive Industry we have lots of different types of businesses.
You could work in a garage which specialises in servicing and maintenance of vehicles, doing MOT’s or tyre fitting or maybe all these things. You could find yourself working as a mobile technician repairing and servicing vehicles at the roadside or at other premises. You could work with motorcycles, cars, lorries, or buses, or even race cars. The possibilities for being a Mechanical Technician are endless.
In this role, the responsibility varies depending on the type of place you work.
Mechanical Technicians will get involved with wheel alignment, air conditioning, diagnostics, electrical faults, and calibration. This role is highly technical particularly with modern electric & hybrid vehicles. You may use hand tools in this role, but you will also use technical equipment which helps diagnose problems and reinstate the vehicle to its pre accident state.
Other roles include Light vehicle and HGV technicians, you may even get involved working in auto glazing
As a Mechanical Technician, you can often expect to:
- Maintain vehicles that may have to travel long distances
- Service, inspect, run regular checks and diagnose any issues found
- Repair or replace the parts once you’ve discovered any issues
- Carry out maintenance and repairs either physically or using technology
- Get trained to understand and work with all kinds of vehicles and equipment
Remember every business is different, and every Mechanical Technician’s role is too, but if you speak to people who do this job they will say “it’s the best job ever” as you help to get people’s vehicles back on the road and looking as good as new.
This position is so important as it means that the Customer will drive away in their vehicle knowing it is safe and will perform better.
Don’t worry as we know you may not have the experience just yet, but you may have some of the qualities already such as problem solving and working well as a team.

- Great communication skills and a willingness to learn
A minimum of grade 4 (formerly C Grade) in English & Maths (GCSE or equivalent) is often but not always required.
