It is one of the biggest decisions you will make, so you need to do your research and find out as much as you can. So if you are not sure where to start, you have come to the right place, we will help you navigate some of the challenges and keep you going in the right direction.
What can I do?
You can check out local work opportunities by searching online for terms like Garages near me, Repairers, or Dealerships, or whatever type of company you are interested in.
Visit company websites to check for a careers page with vacancies. If there aren’t any don’t be disappointed, get in touch with them directly to register your interest. Use an email address instead of a contact form to avoid messages getting lost. Or better still, you can make a phone call or visit in person.
You can visit job sites like Indeed to find apprenticeships by entering your postcode, or GOV.UK to search for local apprenticeships.
Do I need a CV?
When visiting a company, bring your CV if you have one. If you don’t have one right now, put something simple together which lets them know all about you, the great things you can do and why you want to work in their Company.
It will lack work history, but you can include any weekend, evening, or work experience you have done. Any experience helps; you’ve gained new skills and understand more about working in a business.
These skills may have been acquired through participation in sports, hobbies, educational pursuits, or club activities. Write down all the things you are good at, here are some examples:
How can I found out more about a Company?
Not all apprenticeships are advertised on job sites or the GOV.uk site, but they may be found on social media. After you have identified potential workplaces, follow them, like their posts and have a look at what others say about working there, including feedback from customers. Higher ratings or scores indicate a better reputation. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Try setting up a LinkedIn profile with basic information to stay informed about company updates and opportunities. Create or update your profile on LinkedIn
Remember when you are looking at possible places to work, think about how you will get there, also think about if there are any issues with public transport if you don’t drive or are able to get lifts of family or friends. You need to be reliable and punctual, these are some of the main things an Employer needs.
There is a lot to think about but if you are stuck and want some more information then please get in touch
